Boy from the bush travels 3000kms across India
TWO years ago Charleville local Morgan Collins jetted off on a trip of a lifetime and made the move to London, where he lived and worked as a carpenter.
Fast forward and Collins has just completed the Rickshaw Run in India, a 3000km drive in a tuk-tuk from the top of India to the bottom.
Accompanying Collins on the route from Jaisalmer to Kochi, with a halfway party in Goa, were two Aussie builders, Shiloh Mann, from Winton, and Max Griffiths, from Sydney.
The three men met working in London as builders when the idea stemmed to take part in the Rickshaw Run and so the Bare Foot Builders were formed.
Over the next six months, Collins and his mates began fundraising for the run. As part of the voyage teams were required to raise a minimum of $1000 for Cool Earth, a climate change foundation.
The Bare Foot Builders also decided to raise funds for Got The Balls for Proactive Men's Health, where they raised about $6500.
The journey in India began for Collins on December 27, followed by the annual Rickshaw Run versus locals cricket match on New Year's Day.
For the first time in five years the locals lost.
January 2 the boys set off on the unknown route to Kochi, praying they would have a smooth as possible ride as they travelled at maximum speed of 53km/h.
"Most days we would begin driving at 5.30am through to the night and that would be pretty scary because a lot of trucks would be on the road and being in a small tuk-tuk your eye level was in line with the truck lights,” Collins said.
"We would have to pull up every two hours though to let the tuk-tuk cool down, however, most days we would get about 300km, depending on the conditions of the road.”
Fourteen days later and only a couple of minor break downs along the way, the Bare Foot Builders arrived in Kochi.
"It was an unreal experience and nothing like you would get anywhere else. When we arrived in on our tuk-tuk the locals were cheering you along, music playing and plenty of beers to celebrate,” Collins said.
Collins has now returned to Charleville for the time being to save money before the travel bug gets him again.
