BRIGHT FUTURES: Meet Roma State School’s high achievers

THE Western Star meet with Year 11 and 12 students at Roma State School to hear about their favourite subjects, their role models and what they hope to achieve after graduating school.

From professional rugby union players to astrophysicists, human rights lawyers, mechanics, fine artists and dance teachers, there was a variety of career paths these students hope to set off on.

Head of senior campus, Mrs Kate Van Der Meulen said it was great to be able to sit and listen to the student’s hopes and aspirations for after school.

“Some of the grade 12s have shifted in what they’re hoping to do as they get closer to the finishing line,” she said.

“Most of them seem to have a clear idea of where they want to head, but we will ensure we use the next couple of months to make sure each and every one of them have some sort of path to go into, whether it’s university, full-time work or a traineeship.

“It was great to hear from the Year 11 students and just what they’re hoping to do too.”

Roma State College ensure students undertake work experience from Year 9.

“It’s something we value – giving the students the ability to do work experience and we start it in Year 9 to give them the opportunity to do a couple of work experience’s to give them a better idea of where they may like to go after school,” she said.

CHEALSEA hopes to be the role model she didn’t have for women who want to be astrophysicists.

“The motivation for me is to do something not a lot of women do, I don’t have many role models that are female because not a lot of them study this field, so I want to make the change and be the female there for younger kinds,” she said.

“I hope to get into astrophysics after school and go to USQ or UQ to do astronomic sciences.

“It’s always fascinated me.

“Always something I look forward to and I became interested in when I went to STEM camp at school and met an astrophysicist and it sparked a whole interest in all the sciences and just learning how things work.

“It’s interesting to research stars and the basic patterns and sending astronauts up to Mars – there was a recent launch to find more life sources and I’d love to be a part of that and find different worlds.”

LAUREN hopes to be a human rights lawyer when she graduates school.

“I hope to study law after school, there’s a lot of different kinds of law you can get into and I think I’d enjoy it so much because I’d have the capacity to help people,” she said.

“Particularly, human rights law – I really like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a representative in America because she’s progressive and very liberal and fights for what she believes in.

“She has some great clap backs too.”

Lauren was recently accepted into The Australian National University for Criminology but she’s told her mum, “it’s law or nothing.”

She was also accepted into the Envision Stanford university program but COVID got in the way.

What motivates Lauren? “An ATAR of 98 motivates me – but there’s also a lot of social justice issues that I want to have a voice in, like the Black Life Movement and the first issue I looked in depth was the Central Park Five and I was just so interested in how that came to happen,” she said.

FOR Year 11 student Riley, COVID-19 got in the way of her international trip to Russia for hyland dancing.

She dedicates most afternoons to the sport she loves and is currently doing a certificate four in dance teaching and business management which will qualify her to teach for Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD) in two years.

“I started dancing when I was six when mum signed me up, and I dance with my two other sisters which I love,” she said.

Riley’s role model? “I look up to Morgan Bamford for hyland dancing, I got to meet her at the beginning of this year and I was able to do some workshops with her,” she said.

“I asked her how much she trained because she went to Worlds at 8-years-of-age in Scotland and won the competition.”

SINCE choosing his elective subjects in Year 10, Thomas’ interest in Design flourished.

“I’ve currently focused on design and I’ve enjoyed physically sketching new products and also industrial design and putting that into a real-world sense,” he said.

“In Industrial Design we’re making houses at the moment which I’ve really enjoyed and seeing all my friend’s designs are cool.

“Some of the houses I’ve seen, I want to incorporate into my future home,” he joked.

Thomas hopes to go to Queensland University of Technology and do a double degree in Business and Industrial Design.

THE son of Meryl and Craig Eddie who run Boobook in town, Eddie hopes to follow suit and study a Bachelor of science, majoring in Ecology and Zoology.

“I’m interested in all three sciences at school right now – biology, chemistry and physics,” he said.

“Both my parents have environmental science backgrounds and they do ecological consultation which has definitely rubbed off on me.

“I look up to my parents because their jobs are very interesting and I hope to do something similar in the future.”

JUST like her dad, Jamiee has an interest in arts and design.

“I just enjoy being creative,” she said.

“My dad is artsy and it’s a hobby of his – he’s always making something.

“At the moment, I’m thinking about interior architecture or graphic design at Queensland University of Technology after school.”

JONATHON has his eyes set on doing an apprenticeship after graduating school.

“At home, I’m always working with my dad who is a mechanic and I like fixing cars,” he said.

“It’s something we love to do, we just love cars.

“We work as a family and help each other.

“Learning things from other people is what makes it fun.”

Jonathon was a Fitter and Turner in town for three months while going to school.

“It’s good knowing after school I can follow that same path and continue doing an apprenticeship because I liked it,” he said.

“Maybe be a diesel mechanic – I have been applying for jobs.”

LIKE many senior students, Heather isn’t 100 per cent sure on what career path she would like to follow.

“I’m currently liking biology, I’ve always been interested in the human side of biology but whether I’m still interested this time next year, who knows,” she said.

“I would like to do something medical or science-based in the future.

“I want to do something that will benefit people and get into something that is rewarding and good for the community.”

ANDREW was selected out of 20 students in the state to go to the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane last year.

There, he heard various artists speak about their careers and toured the gallery for three days.

Andrew hopes to be a fine art artist in the future.

“I started drawing about four years ago and just gained an appreciation for it,” he said.

“I like studying realism, anatomy and perspective art.”

AS a Year 11 student, Demii has already received offers of owning her own dance studio.

She has competed in Sydney and Brisbane and is currently doing her Certificate Four in Dance Management.

“I’ve just always done dancing since I was little and love it,” she said.

“I hope to be a dance teacher in the future which I will be able to once completing this certificate.

“I’ve had offers from people in town to own a dance studio but I’ll just see how things go.”

LIKE his grandfather, Dylan is interested in maths and science.

“I’ve always liked maths as a kid, my granddad was a maths teacher and science also interests me,” he said.

“I’m looking to do a degree in Veterinary science or Engineering – Chemical or Biological.”

Dylan recently did work experience at Roma Veterinary Clinic and considers the owners Will and Tim as his role models.

“They were really lovely men and they talked a lot about their university degrees when I was there so I became really interested in it,” he said.

“It was great interacting with all the animals and see some procedures like canine removals and desexing.”

CHARMAINE has her mind set on studying Beauty Services at TAFE after school.

“I want to get into Art but I’m going to study Beauty Services from something different then after the first certificate, do lots of other ones and build on all the qualifications,” she said.

“I’ve been artsy since I was little and it helps because my sister is really into art too and it’s something we’re able to do together.”

Her inspiration? “I look up to my mum, she’s very supportive of me and used to do be arty too.”

ANTONIA has recently joined the local rugby union team, the Echidnas, and loves it.

“Previously, I played rugby league since I was 12-years-of-age,” she said.

“I just love the adrenaline of it all.”

She looks up to the likes of Darren Lockyer and professional Australian rugby union player, Emily Cherry.

“I hope to continue playing footy after school,” she said.
